Adoptions

AdoptionsAdopting an animal is an important decision that will affect you, your household, and the animal for many years to come. Please plan on spending enough time with the animal to be sure of your selection. If you do not find the right animal on your first visit to our shelter, please return another day when many new animals will be available for adoption. Our animals come to us either because they were unwanted or they were once strays. We include as much information as we know about an animal on a card which is posted on the animal's kennel in our adoption rooms. We are here to help make a wonderful new addition to your family, but we cannot always guarantee you an adoption.

On-Line Adoption Gallery:

By clicking on 'Adoption Search' in the column on the left, you can view a selection of the many animals we have available for adoption. You can also click on Our Favorite Friends to see some of the animals that have just captured our hearts!  Take a look at some cats in our cageless cat area located in Charlotte's Cat Corner.  View video of some animals in action in Our Video Gallery.  See a selection of pitbulls and pitbull mixes that are available through special adoption on Our Bully Buddies page!  You can also visit our foster animal blog to check out dogs and cats currently in foster care.  Please understand that due to our high adoption turnover rate not all animals will be listed in the adoption gallery and there may be many more animals in our facility than listed on our web site.  Also, while we try to keep the adoption gallery as up-to-date as we can, some of the animals you see listed may no longer be available. You are welcome to call our customer service department @ (312)644-8338 with an animal's tab band number to check on the status of any animal on the list. We're sorry, but we cannot put animals 'on hold.'.

The Adoption Process

  • Selection
Our staff are located in the dog and the cat adoption rooms to assist with selection and answer any questions. Remember, not all animals are appropriate for all household situations, so please allow our staff to assist you in selection.
  • Application and Counseling
Once you have decided on an animal, the room staff will provide you with an application form. Our counselors then review the information on the application. If the adoption is approved, we will provide you with information on training, health, and basic care. We will also answer any questions you may have. You can download a cat or dog adoption form here and complete the application before coming in.
