Dr. Robyn Barbiers
Dr. Robyn Barbiers (a.k.a. Dr. Robyn) is the President of The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, Illinois. With more than 28 years of experience in veterinary care and leadership/management at zoos and veterinary clinics across the country, Dr. Robyn is an established leader in animal health and well-being.
Dr. Barbiers received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 1982, where she graduated with honors.
After working as a staff veterinarian at Stark County Veterinary Emergency Clinic (where she was the first female veterinarian in the county) and the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Cincinnati in Ohio , Dr. Robyn pursued her zoological medicine career at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington as an intern and then a relief veterinarian. She furthered her zoological veterinary career at the Detroit Zoological Parks as a Senior Veterinarian where she was promoted to Chief Zoological Veterinarian.
After 12 years of practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Robyn landed in Chicago at the Lincoln Park Zoo where she spent the next 14 years. Her expertise stood out amongst her peers, leading her from Director of Veterinary Services to Assistant and General Curator to Vice President of Collections.
As an active member of the animal and veterinary communities, Dr. Robyn has been a member of and served as vice-chair and chair of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Animal Health Committee and served on the Accreditation Commission. She was the veterinary advisor for the Maned Wolf Species Survival Program for over a decade. Dr. Robyn was an associate editor for the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine for 8 years and chaired the Editorial Board for 2 years. She also served on the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians' Ethics Committee.
Dr. Robyn is widely published and has lectured on various topics at professional meetings in the U.S., Panama, Honduras, and Brazil.
Dr. Robyn joined The Anti-Cruelty Society in 2008 and is excited by the incredible opportunity of leading such a prestigious and comprehensive animal welfare organization. She serves on the Society of Animal Welfare Administrator's conference committee and is representing animals on various regional disaster preparedness committees.
