Recommended Pet Toys

Cats
Play is an important aspect of keeping our pets healthy, both mentally and physically. Cats need, on average, about 30 minutes of play daily. Not all toys are created equally, however. The best toys imitate natural prey-animal behavior and are durable. Here are our behaviorists' favorite toys for cats:

  • Da Bird
  • Play 'n' Squeak Mouse Hunter
  • Cat Charmer
  • Cat Dancer
  • Busy Buddy Twist 'N Treat - a dog toy, but excellent for cats; Play-N-Treat Cat Balls are another option
  • CFA (Cat Fancier's Association) catnip toys
  • PetStages brand toys - products for different life stages and behavior needs
  • Tube sock stuffed with cotton and catnip - a great toy for cats who love to wrap their legs around things (your legs, for instance) and bite and kick them

Dogs
Play is an important aspect of keeping our pets healthy, both mentally and physically. Dogs need, on average, about 45 minutes of play daily. Not all toys are created equally, however. Here are our behaviorists' favorite toys for dogs:

  • Kong toys (see http://www.kongcompany.com/worlds-best.html for recipes for stuffing for Kong rubber toys)
  • Soft Bite floppy disk - for fetch only; not a chew toy
  • Nylabone brand toys
  • Puzzle-type toys, such as Buster Cube and Nina Ottosson brands
  • Orbee toys
  • PetStages brand toys (except for vinyl toys) - products for different life stages and behavior needs
  • Booda rope toys

Be sure the toys you give your dog are of an appropriate size. Toys that are too small are a choking hazard. Discard toys when they become worn or frayed or develop holes or sharp edges.
