Chicago Animal Shelter Alliance announces lower euthanasia rates in Chicago

Chicago, IL  (September 12, 2006) -  The euthanasia numbers in the Chicago Area are dropping. Between 2003 and 2005 overall citywide euthanasia rates dropped 12% and shelter intake went down to 11%. With an overall shelter killing rate per 1,000 humans at a historic low of 6.9%, Denver remains the only city between the coasts with a lower kill rate (5.9%).

Chicago's animal welfare success can be attributed in part to the combined efforts of citywide shelters working together to reduce euthanasia rates. The Chicago Animal Shelter Alliance (CASA) unites area shelters including The Anti-Cruelty Society, Chicago Animal Care and Control, Chicago Canine Rescue, Felines Inc., Furry Friends Foundation, Harmony House for Cats, Lake Shore Animal Shelter, Inc., New Leash on Life, P.A.C.T., PAWS Chicago, Red Door Animal Shelter, and Tree House Animal Foundation with the mission of forming cooperative working relationships to reduce area wide euthanasia rates and promote rescue and adoption.

On September 21, Chicagoland Tails pet magazine proudly presented , Biscuits and Burgers: A Farewell to Summer Fling to benefit CASA at Carmichael's Steakhouse in the West Loop. Jim Borgelt, current president of CASA formally announced these historic numbers as well as celebrated the alliance between Chicago Area shelters. This was an opportunity for people and their pets to enjoy one last warm summer evening together, while showing support for our City's animals in need.

About CASA

Founded in 2003, the mission of CASA is to reduce the number of animals euthanized in the Chicagoland Area, and to find a loving home for every adoptable animal. This will be accomplished by establishing cooperative working relationships between shelters; by promoting educational outreach to the public concerning pet overpopulation and the importance of neutering animals; by assisting in spay/neuter efforts, and by working to increase the overall number of animals adopted through existing animal shelters citywide.
