NBC 5 Adopt-A-Pet

 Air Date:  January 29h, 2012

PLEASE MEET TAFFY

Taffy

Please watch Taffy's "Adopt-a-Pet" segment on NBC5 Chicago here.

Taffy is a dear! Taffy is a 7-year old Beagle who came to the shelter when her owner could no longer care for her.  Very social with people, she likes to make a circuit of a room and say hi to every person in it. She'll jump up lightly, placing her paws on a person, and just hang around as long as she's getting attention. When she's not snuggling with a human she's exploring her surroundings, sniffing in every corner and checking out every door. She had no interest in resources during her evaluation so new adopters may have to put a little extra effort into finding out what Taffy likes with regards to treats and toys. Nosework may be a fun activity for this scent hound as it'll give her something to sniff out, work her brain and keep her moving. Taffy has lived amicably with dogs, cats and even horses! Fun, sweet, ready-made companion.  Stop on by The Anti-Cruelty Society and ask to meet Taffy, #15028542.

Thank you to all who visited her.

Moxie

Please watch Moxie's "Adopt-a-Pet" segment on NBC5 Chicago here.

Moxie is a 5-year old Chow mix who came to us from an HSUS emergency hoarding rescue and seems quite ready to leave her past behind and move on to her bright future. She is a happy, social and affectionate girl who is generous with kisses and attention. She is active, playful and entertaining, as well as somewhat physical and very agile. She will need appropriate guidance, training/confidence building, as she has likely had limited exposure to anything outside her previous Mississippi home. She also may end up being a fairly skilled jumper and climber. She climbed and perched herself onto a fairly narrow ledge in order to look out the window. Activities such as agility classes may be a great outlet for her to productively (and safely) channel her energy, coordination and skills, and are a great way to enhance the person/pet relationship. Moxie will be a lot of fun and will likely blend well into a variety of families.  Stop on over to The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for Moxie, #14993280.

SHEBA HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Thank you to all who visited her.

Sheba

To meet Sheba is not only to love her -- but to ADORE her! This beautiful girl is very endearing, gentle and laid-back. Sheba is a 7-year old Rottweiler mix who came to the shelter when her owner was moving and couldn't take her along. Sheba is a sweet and mellow girl who seeks attention and leans her head on everyone and anyone near her. Sheba knows some basic commands such as "sit", is easy on the leash and takes treats gently. She is a quiet and calm lady who has a low activity level and just wants to spend her life loving you. Sheba is a bit full-figured, weighing in at 97 lbs., and helping Sheba slim down once in her new home will keep her healthy and happy. Sheba would be a great addition to the family, however, Sheba probably would be happiest as your only pet -- but then with Sheba around, why would you need anyone else! A home without children is preferred due to Sheba's size and strength -- yet, Sheba would do GREAT in an all-adult home. Sheba has already stolen many hearts at the shelter and once you meet her, you will soon see why.  Click HERE to see Sheba's newest video  (added 8/31/11) and HERE to see her first video.  You will  see how sweet she really is!  Sheba may be a big girl, but she has a heart just as big -- won't you come and meet her? Sheba is available for hugs and love at The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for #12355654.

FRANCISCO HAS BEEN ADOPTED

Thank you to all who visited him.

Francisco

Francisco is a 1-2 year old cute Terrier mix!  He's got a wonderful soft brown coat and the cutest little underbite!  Francisco came to us as a transfer from another shelter and is a very high-energy, playful guy. To see Francisco's video and to see just how cute he is, click HERE!  He becomes adorably bouncy and animated when he plays, and can become fairly jumpy, physical and a bit grabby.  He readily accepted all handling and made himself at home in one new friend's lap.  He really enjoys all sorts of toys and bone/chew items, and showed some mild-moderate resource guarding behaviors with both.  Francisco is very smart and catches on to new concepts very quickly (such as willingly trading one item for another), so his guarding behavior should be very workable if his adopters are knowledgable and diligent about helping him understand that good things happen when people are near his "stuff." An all-adult home is highly recommended. Ongoing training and activities will also be a great outlet to help keep his brain and body busy.  Weighing in at a mere 10 lbs., Francisco would be a great dog for a condo or apartment dweller.  Francisco is waiting for you at The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for #13864415.  Don't wait, this fun guy is sure to be adopted quickly!

Layla came to the shelter when her owner could no longer afford to keep a pet. Layla is very scared here at the shelter, it is clear she would be much happier in a cozy new home where she can have her own space, and relax and enjoy life. During our photo shoot Layla enjoyed some soft pets and chin scratches -- she wanted to be friends, but just wasn't ready to let it show. When Layla arrived at the shelter, she developed an upper respiratory infection which she had a hard time shaking. Our vets noted that Layla may have some sneezing and eye discharge down the road that may require a quick trip to your own kitty vet to keep her in tip-top shape. Layla is also a bit full-figured, so with a lite diet and some playful exercise, in no time at all, Layla will trim down and be Cat Fancy model material! Layla also has some matting to her beautiful fur, so regular brushing will be a must. She would do best in a home where she can be your only cat, as she is not a fan of her fellow felines. Layla may need a little time to acclimate to her new home, but she will be well worth the effort. She's a lovely girl who just needs someone all her own to love and make her feel safe. Won't you come and meet her? Layla is patiently waiting for you at The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for #12056652. Layla is ready to go home with you today!

BEAR HAS BEEN ADOPTED

Thank you to all who visited him.

Bear

Wow!!!  Bear is absolutely, positively GORGEOUS!!!  This handsome boy is 2 1/2 years old and is a beautiful Chow mix.  His coat is full and healthy, and his personality is that of a gentle soul.  Bear was adopted from us and returned through no fault of his own.  His new owner had unrealistic expectations and felt it best to give him up so that he could find that perfect forever home where he can live happily ever after.  Bear is understandably a bit stressed here at the shelter, and his new adopters are sure to learn more about him as he gets settled and more comfortable in his new home.  Bear is affectionate and seeks out attention from people, but will need practice coping in unfamiliar environments.  He walks well on a leash and was very well-behaved during our photo shoot, enjoying the fresh air and looking for pets!  He sat nicely at my feet when we were finished, then started acting all silly rolling around a bit looking for even more pets!! Bear's perfect home would be one where any children are at least older teens and, of course, he would need to meet any other dogs in the family first to make sure they could be best buds.  A big lovable guy who deserves a wonderful home where he will get lots of love and hugs, Bear weighs in at a healthy 55 lbs.  He is patiently waiting for you at The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for #11839031.  Bear has his bags packed and is ready to go home with you today!

If so, here are a few things you need to know about me:   I will be very happy to go home with you, but I will need some adjustment time as I have not been socialized and my new surroundings will be a whole new world for me. So we both need to be very patient, understanding and give lots of love.   I wasn't cared for properly until now, so I may have some medical conditions that may cost you extra money during my lifetime. You know the average cost of caring for a dog my size is about $1,000 a year, so you will need to add to that cost for extra veterinary care.  The behavior staff here will be available to answer any of your questions to help us be better companions, and they do it for free. DAISY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Thank you to all who visited her.

Daisy

Daisy
is a pretty 1 1/2 year old orange and white tabby.  Her fur is wispy soft, and is soft and fluffy.  Daisy is a friendly girl who only recently arrived in the adoption room and is still getting acclimated to all the changes in her life, and is just a little nervous right now.  She did enjoy looking out the window of the shelter at all the people and cars, perhaps hoping someone would come in and take her home where she can run, play and get back to the important business of being a cat.  Daisy would do best in a home without the activity of young children, but she would do great in an all-adult home or a home with teenaged children. Daisy loves tasty treats and soft pets, and is sure to relax once settled in her new home where she has lots of toys to play with and someone all her own to love.  Won't you come and meet Daisy?  She's waiting for you at The Anti-Cruelty Society, just ask for #10470755.  Daisy is ready to go home with you today!

SEBASTIAN HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Thank you to all who visited him.

Sebastian

When I first came to visit Sebastian, he came right up to say hello and then backed off a little, and seemed just a little shy.  He soon warmed up and I realized that he was a friendly little fellow, so off we went for a nice walk outside -- the entire time, Sebastian was wagging his tail and smiling, so grateful for some attention and a breath of fresh air!  It wasn't until after our visit that I found out little Sebastian is 11 years old -- you would never know it, he's fun, he's active and very affectionate.  Sebastian came to the shelter when his owner "ran out of space", so poor Sebastian was left without a home.  Well, our vets examined this little fellow and noted that he's got luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps), which don't seem to be creating any problems now, but will be something your own vet will want to monitor as he ages.  He also has severe dental disease and will need a dental cleaning and possible extractions soon after he is adopted, so Sebastian will require an investment.  Well, there you have it -- so Sebastian has a few imperfections ... but when you see that fun smile and wagging tail, how can you not want to take him home and do all you can to take care of him.  At 11 years old, Sebastian deserves a home with someone who will care for him and love him ... and for that he will be eternally grateful.  Helping this guy out will surely earn you your angel wings and will give you days of doggie kisses from one very lovable fellow ... little Sebastian.  Please stop on by The Anti-Cruelty Society and ask to meet Sebastian, #11433827.  He's a special little guy -- we think he deserves someone just as special.
