The Anti-Cruelty Society Announces Annual Award Winners

CHICAGO – The Anti-Cruelty Society, Chicago’s largest full-service humane society, annually honors those who make major paw-prints for the Society.  Today, The Anti-Cruelty Society has announced those individuals that will be honored at the awards ceremony to be held in conjunction with the Society’s annual meeting on Monday, December 3.

Pepper Construction, named Business of the Year, for their efficient and timely construction efforts so that even more animals can be helped at The Anti-Cruelty Society.

Sheriff Tom Dart, named Humanitarian of the Year, for his efforts to suppress dog fighting in Cook County. In particular, his efforts in support of the multi-jurisdictional dog fighting task force with the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney have been rewarded with large scale dog seizures.

Tom Finley and his dog Reba, named Media Couple of the Year, their story touched all of us. They are, together again, the reward of hope and love.

“We can’t thank these individuals enough for their commitment to the animals and helping to make Chicago a more caring and compassionate community,” said Dr. Gene Mueller, president of The Anti-Cruelty Society.

Other individuals to be recognized with the Society’s Rose Fay Thomas Special Recognition Awards include: retired board member Freeman Wood Jr.’s family has been leading the Society for three generations; retired board member Michael Kuzma for establishing a major fundraising program; Meg Martino and the Chicago Stray Cat Coalition for their years of work in stemming the reproduction of free roaming cats; Mary Fitzgerald and Susan Sidwell for introducing humane educational programs to the student residents of the Illinois Youth Corrections Facility in St. Charles.  All of these individuals have dedicated themselves to the Society and helped to establish successful programs that educate and provide resources for Chicagoland’s animals to enjoy.

About The Anti-Cruelty Society

The Anti-Cruelty Society (ACS) is one of the largest full-service animal shelters in the country, serving over 20,000 animals each year.  Last year The ACS adopted out over 5,700 animals and spayed or neutered more than 13,000 cats and dogs.  The Society’s mission extends beyond animal shelter, medical care and rescue, into the areas of humane education, behavior counseling and training.  Since its founding in 1899, The Society has been an advocate for companion animals and the people who care for – and about – them.
