The Anti-Cruelty Society Announces
The Animal Expressions Young Artist Contest Winners

The Anti-Cruelty Society celebrates its birthday each year by awarding students that use their talents to spread compassion in their communities. The “Animal Expressions Young Artists Contest” culminated with a celebration on March 7th for the contest winners. Student submissions included drawings, paintings, poems, photographs, and other great works of art.

Seventeen students came with their families to The Anti-Cruelty for an afternoon celebration on March 7th. Submissions had been coming in for months as the contest was open to all young people between five and eighteen years-old. Over 125 entries were received for the contest. Prizes were given to the best submission in the media category (photograph, painting, drawing, etc.) and each category had separate winners by age group. Edwin Cruz, age 17 won a prize for his beautiful multimedia picture of a boy walking his dog. Loren Mendez, age 12 won an award for her booklet containing thoughtful essays, photographs and drawings. These were just a few of the beautiful and meaningful works of art submitted by Chicago young artists; each and every one of them is a winner!

What a great way for The Anti-Cruelty Society to celebrate 111 years of caring! This year’s theme, a “Community of Caring” was not only evident in the young artists’ work, but speaking to the talented students made it apparent that caring for animals and their communities is something that truly matters to each of them.
